Background of the study
Digital language evolution has become a significant area of research as social media platforms transform traditional linguistic practices. In Nigeria, Facebook and Twitter represent two major digital arenas where language is continuously reshaped by rapid communication, cultural exchanges, and innovative text forms. Users on these platforms exhibit emergent linguistic behaviors—from the adoption of slang to the creation of new syntactic structures—reflecting broader social dynamics and the influence of global digital trends (Ibrahim, 2023). Facebook facilitates long‐form discussions and community building, while Twitter’s character constraints foster concise and creative language use. These divergent communication styles contribute to a dynamic interplay between formal language conventions and evolving digital vernaculars. This study explores how these platforms serve as laboratories for language change, examining patterns such as abbreviation use, emoji integration, and novel sentence structures. It also considers the impact of algorithmic content curation and user interaction on accelerating linguistic shifts. The investigation aims to document these phenomena, analyzing how socio-cultural factors and technological affordances drive the evolution of language in digital contexts. By understanding these processes, the study contributes to the broader discourse on digital sociolinguistics and offers insights into the future trajectory of language in an increasingly online world (Okafor, 2024). This research situates itself at the intersection of technology, culture, and communication, providing a comprehensive exploration of language evolution on Nigerian social media.
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing presence of digital language practices, there is limited empirical research on how platforms like Facebook and Twitter uniquely contribute to language evolution in Nigeria. Existing studies often treat digital language as a monolithic phenomenon, neglecting platform-specific influences such as content format and user engagement strategies (Chukwu, 2023). Consequently, the mechanisms through which these platforms drive changes in syntax, vocabulary, and style remain underexplored. This gap hinders our understanding of the adaptive processes that underpin online communication and their implications for traditional language norms. Without systematic investigation, educators and policymakers may be unable to anticipate or manage the impact of digital evolution on linguistic identity and proficiency (Adebayo, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of language evolution on two major social media platforms in Nigeria. The findings will offer valuable insights for sociolinguists, educators, and digital communication strategists by highlighting the distinct mechanisms of language change in digital environments, thereby informing future research and language policy development (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on digital language evolution on Facebook and Twitter among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language practices, ensuring a concentrated examination of the specified digital phenomenon.
